As you know, I do keep a very close eye on the sales both here and over in France and, for sure, we really are going to have to get our tongues around some funky named horses this winter.
One you won’t have to worry about is a horse called APPLE’S SHAKIRA.
This is the one I’ve earmarked for the Triumph Hurdle this season. The reason for this is the owner, the bloke they got it from and the trainer it has gone to.
It used to be I’d be looking primarily for horses being purchased from Guillaume Macaire but now it’s a trainer called Emmanuel Clayeaux that catches my eye….although still very much interested in what Macaire is doing, too.
Clayeaux sold last seasons Triumph Hurdle winner, DEFI DU SEUIL, to McManus and it’s hopefully a case of deja vu because I’m going to look around and see if I can get a price for the Triumph.
The same trainer also sent APPLE’S JADE to Ireland and this one is a full sister to that crackerjack of a mare. APPLE’S SHAKIRA won an 11 runner race at Vichy, beating another from the Clayeaux yard easily, with the Macaire trained favourite, ECEPARTI nine lengths.
Snapped up by McManus and boxed off to Nicky Henderson, she’ll hopefully win a few before getting competitive in March.
I love the Cheltenham Bumper as a source of winners for the following season and I felt this years race was a cracker. You have the first three home in my 20 below but one I’ve introduced, DEAD RIGHT, I did so because at the Punchestown Festival in April, he “mullahed” the fourth home at Cheltenham, NEXT DESTINATION (who went off at odds on in Ireland), easily.
This one is also owned by McManus but trained by Neil Mulholland I think he’ll want decent ground so if it’s sloppy, wait until the word “good” is in the going description.
I’ll be posting the list up on the website but wanted to get it out to you now because CAUSE TOUJOURS is entered up for a couple this week (17th & 19th). He went off favourite for the Bumper at Cheltenham but simply didn’t get up the hill. On a flatter track I reckon he’ll be mighty competitive over hurdles this season.
