Today’s Ratings and Advice 25/04/15

Ron RobinsonGot up usual time today so that I could get the figures for 11 rated races out to you and next come a three hour drive south.

One more week before I start betting again. These are the last figures I will be sending out for a week and Weekend Club members will be compensated for the lack of Newsletter tomorrow, by having full figures for the next Bank Holiday Monday.

I need this break but will keep my finger on the pulse and if something needs sending out this week, I’ll sneak something out whilst “she who must be obeyed” isn’t looking.

Whilst the hullabaloo is going on at Sandown I’ll be looking at that Ripon 3-25 as being the result I am most interested in. That’s a cracker, with a draw bias I’d suggest means anything drawn high will need airlifting in to win. Low looks best from middle and my top rated in that is only just off low….he’ll run a decent race, i’m sure.

SANDOWN

I promised Michelle I would look at that meeting as she is off to wave goodbye to the most prolific jumps jockey I have ever seen. I’m not going down the road of calling him the greatest “jockey” but I’ve never seen a “will to win” like it before.

I visited Rebecca Curtis’s yard a couple of years ago and her partner, Gearoid, and I went into the village for a pint. Across the road was a dentists surgery and he was telling me how he had taken AP there a few weeks earlier because he had been kicked in the mouth and several front teeth and been nearly removed. The dentate was asked by AP to put them back in place without using needles to numb the pain because he had a ride in a few races next day and didn’t want a trace of anything in his blood stream. Gearoid told me he screamed his head off but the job was done and he rode next day.

Today I wanted to do a mini profile on those races I could but they are all over the place.  Charlie Hill was, let’s say, less than complimentary about the ground there yesterday and has sworn never to support this mixed fixture again. I’ll not even look at it next year.

So, what can I advise besides keeping the purse under lock and key?

I don’t expect major surprises and LE REVE looks to have been trained for the Gold Cup Chase….I’d not be punting against it.
If I had to put one up, that’d be it.
I’d fancy OLD GUARD in the first but all the form is on soft!
MENORAH looks a good thing in the 2-35
Eight year olds have a good record in the 3-15 (nine of the 23 that have run in the last 10 years have won or placed), and SPECIAL TIARA looks as good a bet as any. The winner has also been in the first two in the betting on six of the last 10 runnings…fits.
RAYVIN BLACK (4-25) has winning and place form at Sandown and quicker ground won’t bother it.
The winner of the 5-00 will be in the front three on the tissue and, given Nicholls is Mr Saturday….HOWLONGISAFOOT!
Nicholls took the last race on the card last year…SOUTHFIELD VIC for me.

I wouldn’t bet on any of that lot but I guess, if you are there, “fun betting” has to take place!

Right….today’s numbers are below….it’s next week the betting boots are back on and we get back to work.

I will bring you all back a stick of rock.

NOTES: This is the race I would be most looking forward to seeing. PIPERS NOTE did top rated players a good turn at Beverley recently and I mentioned then I would be looking forward to him running at Ripon as he’s a 3 x CD winner here. That draw is off putting today though, despite match fitness. Higher end of middle gives him a job to win this.

The last time he won here, he beat ANOTHER WISE KID a short head and that one has a box slot today. He’s a five furlong horse though and whilst he has won on seasonal debut before, his form figures first time up are otherwise 6, 9, 5.

FAST SHOT, who also has a good draw to run from, has good CD form does however, seem to need juice in the ground. He has not won on good to firm since 2011, the last five wins coming on slower.

My top rated has not won a race before June since debut in 2012…and that was only a week before June arrived. He’s an inch of getting the § to go along with that other pair of icons and as a previous CD winner is also very interesting.

VAN ELLIS gets the trio of icons but he has not seen a racecourse for 814 days and would rather be whizzing around Chester anyway.

If this were May I would be looking to play rated horses 1, 2 and 4 but given all those doubts about most of them and it being April, I’ll just check the result later to see how this panned out.

RIPON 4-00
