One questionable ride pretty much ends a career….

Tuesday 27 August 13

2-0, back of the net – no, not football sadly, but the eventual detailed (and I mean detailed) report explaining why jockey Eddie Ahern has been banned for ten years – even after his appeal (so a double loss then). Page after page of legal argument were e mailed to me (and all in a language I struggled to understand), basically rejecting pretty much everything the jockey said which is a real shame as I used to make a bomb backing Eddie at Lingfield on the polytrack back in the day. Having looked at his ride on Judgethemoment at Lingfield I admit it didn’t look great, but the horse had been beaten in his previous ten races (wait for it) by 11 lengths, 59 lengths, 23 lengths, 21 lengths, 23 lengths, 20 lengths, 39 lengths, 44 lengths, 13 ½ lengths, and 22 lengths – oh and 17 ½ lengths in his only race afterwards! Admittedly he did ease on track from 8/1 to 12/1 but personally, if I wanted to fix a race for a horse to lose one with that sort of form that no one in their right mind would want to back anyway would be very low on my list – and I do have to wonder whether the one race was given far too much relevance in the case – what do you think?
