Well wash out is the word I am looking for with all my advance bets (and article) a complete waste of time as the rains fell down, runners were withdrawn, the draw negated, and Saturday pretty much a washout. My main fancy as for Thistle Bird in the Celebration mile at Goodwood as an each way alternative to the jolly but as it was too holding for the five year old I was aware of my likely fate before the stalls even opened. As it was, Afsare was an easy enough winner and I doubt Roger Charlton’s mare would have go a blow in on any ground, but I would love to know why Luca Cumani’s gelding is suddenly showing such a vast improvement?
At York, I doubt I ever begrudge Lady Cecil a winner being such a massive and life long fan of her late husband, whatever I may have backed, and to see Tiger Cliff take the Ebor brought a smile to my face. Six non runners rather spoiled the race but the winner can do no more than take the spoils, and although my selection ran well enough in fourth, non runners made sure I failed to collect.
Lastly, In Ireland the real War Command ran away with the Futurity Stakes and seemed as good as he looked at Ascot after flopping last time out in the Phoenix Stakes and may need seven furlongs these days, though as I have said a million times, no ante post prices could tempt me at this silly early stage thank you very much – certainly not the 10/1 for the 2000 guineas being bandied about tonight!
