The Day In Brief 22nd July 2013

Monday 22nd July 13

One week and one day to go until the start of Glorious Goodwood but all that means is rumours news – and some pretty poor racing between now and then but what can you do? The only press release I received was about Jim Goldie’s ever popular Hawkeyethenoo (pictured), a handicap sprinter who invariably lands one decent pot each season with the Stewards Cup from Goodwood last season’s example. He has been mixing it with the best this season including a more than respectable fifth last time out over seven furlongs in a Group three at Newmarket. Although aimed at the seven furlong Betfair International Stakes at Ascot next weekend I am yet to be convinced he really stays that trip in the higher grades, but a poor defeat will only up his price for Goodwood when I may well get stuck in (but only after listening to Ron and his ratings of course)? All I can add from Monday is that Sea The Stars sired his first winner via Stars Over The Sea for Mark Johnston in the first at Ayr, winning a three horse race at odds on by three lengths in a pretty slow time considering the ground. Considering his breeding he was “cheap” at $55,000 and knocked £4,528.30 off of that “debt” here and could be worth watching if kept at a sensible grade?
