The day in brief – 18th July 2013

go racingIn brief, Ron has (kindly) tasked me with a small, to the point article each day summarising the main points of the days racing as I see it (200 words or so) – both results and incidents etc – so here we go……

Thursday 18th July 13

Another warm day saw faster ground and plenty of non runners but so be it – better that than the dreaded overwatering eh?  As the sun shines, drinks are poured, and many of you consider a trip to the races, can I point you gently in the direction of Ripon on Saturday afternoon where not only are you assured of a warm welcome and a great time, but you can raise money for charity at the same time on day one of the Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival. Kevin Darley will be there providing paddock tips free of charge as well as risking embarrassment with a £20 charity bet per race, so do go along and support them if you possibly can?

Back to the track this afternoon and I am wary of the form where the fillies are concerned in this heat – it may not be PC to say so but they do get more stressed than the colts and plenty will have left their race behind before even approaching the stalls, so do be extra wary of taking the form too literally. One horse who came back to form with a bag was one time Derby hope Telescope who destroyed an admittedly inferior pairing at Leicester by 20 lengths and more (others eased to be fair) but in a lightning fast time. Where he goes from here will be interesting with the St Leger a possible but if I owned him (we can all dream), then it would be all systems go for the Juddmonte at York with the mile and quarter trip looking ideal and where I for one would find it tricky to oppose him?
