All true racing fans are praying as I write to whatever God they do or don’t believe in for the recovery of St Nicholas Abbey who will need to be a fighter of the toughest kind to fight off colic on the back of a serious operation. He wasn’t one of my favourites and I can’t be two faced enough to pretend he was, but his record speaks volumes and I am sure he would have been successful at stud if not one of the superstars Coolmore may expect.
On the racing front how impressive was Sennockian Star at Ascot when winning by close to four lengths and in a pretty fast time (better than standard), a feat only matched by Godolphin’s Zibelina on the card? I am not suggesting he will win next time out (we will need to see if he also caught the handicappers’ eye), but it is a good sign that the Mark Johnston string are in great heart ahead of Glorious Goodwood where he will look to make up for a frankly disappointing Royal Ascot. Talking of Zibelina, she looked like an untapped filly and as she seems sure to head in to Group class next time out, who cares what the handicapper thinks? She quickened up very smartly off a slow early pace to win with plenty in hand and I will be looking for her next outing with interest – she should be able to take a sensible step up in class in her long stride, and as she seems to handle any going (won first time out on good to soft), and is very much one to keep on your side for the rest of the season.
