The day in brief – 20th July 2013

gloomy sundayIn brief, Ron has (kindly) tasked me with a small, to the point article each day summarising the main points of the days racing as I see it (200 words or so) – both results and incidents etc – so here we go……

All the news today seems geared around future entries with French raider Gloomy Sunday (pictured), looking to add the Goodwood Cup to her Sandown victory in the Henry II Stakes when she last came over. Described by trainer Christophe Ferland as “very, very well since Sandown”, it may take something pretty special to stop yet more prize money travelling overseas and at this early stage, I certainly will not be considering taking her on.

Looking even further ahead, the Gosden camp confirmed that Bahrain Trophy winner Feel Like Dancing will be added to the St Leger field and I have to say, I do feel he is massively over priced at 20/1 or thereabouts, though I suppose we will all know more after the Great Voltigeur which is his next target if all goes to plan. I very rarely bet ante post thanks to the inherent risks involved but at that price I cannot resist, though up to you whether you follow me in or just laugh at the old duffer?

Lastly, what happened to Oaks winner Talented who looked anything but when stone cold last in the Irish equivalent? The slow early pace is already being blamed in some quarters and she did pull too hard for her own good but even the two do not add up to this poor showing and I suspect something will be found in the course of the next few days.
